Plant's tools and working methodology are very flexible for all involved.

Plant calculates Fabege's projects during several stages of the construction process. The biggest advantage of Plant is the streamlining of the calculation process, which reduces the burden on the designers, according to Sandra Holmström, sustainability specialist at Fabege.

- With Plant loading 3D models, the workload for our project participants is reduced. We also feel that we get a more reliable and quality-assured calculation result with the interpretations and estimates that the tool makes. Previously, we have hired consultants who sent out excel files that the designers filled in with building parts, constituent materials and quantities, a very time-consuming work with a high risk of incorrect data. This is not something the designers want to prioritize when they are tasked with designing a building. Now it's quicker to produce calculations and then the project can spend time figuring out how to reduce the CO2 footprint instead," says Sandra Holmström.

Plant performs all climate calculations for Fabege's rebuilding and new productions since the framework agreement was signed in late spring 2022. The calculations must follow Fabege's guideline for CO2 calculation, which means that the first calculation is performed at an early stage. This is done to set a baseline for the construction and to be able to make climate-smart choices and material optimization early on. During design and after completion, the climate calculation is revised to ensure that the choices made by the project contribute to a reduction in the project's CO2 impact.

According to Fabege's guidelines for CO2 calculations, Plant must define "ten worst cases" for the project that will be prioritized for further CO2 savings. It can be anything from material optimization, choice of structures and building components and specific materials to be further discussed at workshops in the projects where Plant's advisors also participate.

- Plant's advisors are highly skilled and experienced, so the advice we receive in the projects is very valuable and we are constantly gaining new knowledge. The fact that Plant's advisors work exclusively with CO2 calculations and advice regarding reduced CO2 footprint in projects is a strength. We have a very good dialog about the development of our guideline and working methodology, says Sandra Holmström.

Fabege has adopted a target to halve its CO2 footprint in construction projects by 2030 and has also set interim targets for the journey. To monitor the targets, Plant's calculations are used. Fabege's guideline for CO2 calculations is more ambitious than the Swedish legal requirement, since more building components and more life cycle phases must be calculated, as well as renovations over 20 million.
- "We have decided on a guideline that, in addition to legal requirements, also meets the criteria of the BREEAM certification system and the EU taxonomy," concludes Sandra Holmström.
