New standard values are positive

Recently, updated templates for the climate impact of interior finishes, fixtures and technical installations were released. Johanna Brismark, LCA specialist at Plant, was involved in the development of the previous version and welcomes this revision.

Johanna, what do the new default values mean?

The update includes the standard values now used as industry practice for interior finishes, fixed furnishings and technical installations (i.e. building components 7 and 8). A clear trend is that all standard values have been increased. The most drastic increases are seen for installations for preschools, schools and offices. The standard values for surface coatings and furnishings in apartment buildings have also been raised considerably. In connection with this, a new version of the reference value study was also published where the reference values with an extended system limit (including building components 7 and 8) have been updated according to the new templates.

What do you think about the evaluation of the templates?

I think it is positive that an evaluation has been carried out and that it has been possible to carry out a more robust investigation this time. The original report suggested that these templates should be investigated further if they are to be used in practice, which we now see them doing to a large extent in the industry. In addition, the reference value study is an important basis for the development of the limit values that the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning will set and since they are expected to include these building components, it is good that the state of knowledge about their climate impact has improved.

How does the update affect Plant's climate calculations?

It is important for us at Plant to adapt our calculation methodology in line with developments in the industry. Methodological development is an important element for us and the rest of the industry to be able to deliver better and more representative calculations, whether it is climate data, templates or scenarios. The implementation of the new templates has begun and they will be used during the spring. At the same time, we are aware that this may affect the comparability between different calculations, which is an important part of the climate work. We therefore try to maintain a close dialog with our customers about how the update affects their work.

In addition to the changes to the templates, they are now also more transparent regarding the underlying assumptions and system choices and are also broken down to a greater extent. This makes it possible to calculate parts of these building components on a project-specific basis. Then you can choose to focus on the parts where the project can work with measures or where they use a different system solution than what the templates are based on.
